A method is claimed for (semi-)automatic weld deposition of filler metal, using a flux of basicity pH 1.3-3.2, onto the worn upper and/or side faces of steel rails, e.g. rail heads, switch-tongues and frogs of railway crossings, of composition 0.45-0.82 wt.% C, 0.7-1.5 wt.% Mn, 0.07-0.55 wt.% Si, balance Fe and impurities. The method involves arc weld deposition of a filler metal of composition 0.06-0.10 wt.% C, 0.5-1.5 wt.% Mn, 0.05-0.5 wt.% Si, balance Fe and impurities onto the rail head at a heat input (Q) of K/*(5.9 to 8.0 kJ/cm.) and an advance speed (v) of 40-75 cm/min., where K is 1 for the upper rail surface and is 2.6 for the side rail surface and where Q = ~e/*60/*U/*I/v, in which ~e is the efficiency, U is the voltage, I is the current and v is the advance speed. Also claimed is a similar method in which (i) the filler metal also contains 1.8-4.5 wt.% Ni, 0-0.2 wt.% V, 0-0.3 wt.% Mo, 0-0.1 wt.% Nb, 0-0.4 wt.% Cr, 0-1.6 wt.% Al and 0-0.1 wt.% Ti in a total amount of /~5 wt.%; and (ii) the heat input (Q) is K/*(5.9 to 11.5 kJ/cm.)
|
