Biological treatment of a liquid takes place in a vessel containing a tubular filter membrane module and gas and liquid supply and discharge means. The gas and liquid flow in the same direction along the membrane wall. The flow channel of the membrane is helical so that an axial flow produces a secondary flow perpendicular to the first. The gas distribution contains an injector to produce gas bubbles with a diameter the same as or greater than the radius of the flow channel.
