<p>Non-dimming window shields for protective masks, spectacles, car windows, etc. are produced by swelling surface of transparent or translucent plastics film or plate (esp. PVC, polyvinylidenedichloride, fluoropolymers, poly(meth)acrylates, polycarbonates, polyvinyl acetate) in olefinically unsaturated organic acid(s), (esp. (meth)acrylic, maleic or fumaric or unsaturated sulpho acids), opt. in solvent (e.g. water, methanol), which does not attack the plastics, then irradiating with high energy radiation, e.g. x-, gamma-, beta-electron- or nuclear reactor mixed radiation and neutralising acid groups present, e.g. with aqs. basic solution. Treatment produces hydrophilic layer which remains chemically bonded to substrate surface for almost unlimited period, in contrast to coatings of glycerin, gelatin, wetting agent, etc., which have been used for this purpose.</p> |
