摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to perform the display control of a ferroelectric liquid crystal display element by an active matrix system while maintaining high-speed responsiveness and a wide visual field angle by specifying film thicknesses of oriented films to be positioned on both sides of a liquid crystal layer. SOLUTION: A liquid crystal layer 107 is formed by filling ferroelectric liquid crystal between oriented films 151, 152 and respective opening parts of respective pixel electrodes 132 and black matrix 103 are arranged so as to be opposed each other across the liquid crystal layer 107. Electric fields are impressed on the liquid crystal layer 107 in between respective pixel electrodes 132 and the transparent electrodes 131 of parts corresponding to the electrodes 132. The transparent electrodes 131 are constituted of general ITO(indium tin oxide). Then, general polyimide is used in the oriented films 151, 152, which are variously formed into thicknesses of not thinner than 600Å. That is, thicknesses of the oriented films 151, 152 are made thicker and in an area, where the thickness is not thinner than 600Å, a memory characteristic becomes '0' substantially and bistability is completely vanished. At this time, the liquid crystal layer 107 maintains a dark state because of its monostability and, for example, the layer becomes a bright state only when a pulse having a negative polarity is impressed on it.
