PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gear train, by which an automatic transmission with extremely short overall length can be designed and constructed simply and an output of an engine can be effectively used, for a six speed range automatic transmission for a vehicle. SOLUTION: The subject gear train, in which the second simple planetary gear set 30 is arranged on the outside of a ring gear 32 of the first simple planetary gear set 28 while the ring gear 32 serves as a sun gear 34 for the second simple planetary gear set 30, comprises clutch means 8, 10, 12, which are arranged between a composite planetary gear set 6 provided with five action elements and the three action elements in the five action elements of the composite planetary gear set 6 and works so that these action elements work as input elements selectively, and brake means 14, 16, 18, which are arranged between at least three or more action elements in the five elements and a transmission housing 42 and work so that these action elements work as repulsion elements selectively, and the like.
