PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce heat generation in the vicinity of an optical modulation means by providing a 2nd polarization changing means for adjusting the polarization directions of three color light beams on an optical path between a 1st polarization changing means and a color synthesis means. SOLUTION: After the s-polarized red light beam emitted from the polarization changing element 140 is reflected by a reflection mirror 220, it is made incident on a 1st liquid crystal light valve 250 and only an s-polarized light beam is emitted. The s-polarized green light beam separated by a 2nd dichroic mirror 212 is made incident on a 2nd liquid crystal light valve 252 and only a p-polarized light beam is emitted. After the s-polarized blue light beam separated by the mirror 212 is reflected by reflection mirrors 222 and 224, it is made incident on a 3rd liquid crystal light valve 254 and only the p-polarized light beam is emitted. Since the respective incident light beams are previously adjusted to linearly polarized light beams being a modulated object by the light valves 250, 252 and 254, the light is hardly absorbed in the vicinity of the light valves 250, 252 and 254, and the heat generation is reduced. |
