The heel protector consists of a moulded plastic plug (3) of a hard polyurethane resin which fits into the hollow heel (2) of the shoe and has a base (4) with a recess (9) for an insert (8) of a more supple and slip-resistant plastic, e.g. a more supple polyurethane resin. The insert (8) is surrounded by the rim (10) of the base and has surface relief markings to enhance its anti-slip properties. In addition, the inside of the plug can have reinforcing ribs (11).
