Lower alpha-olefins, e.g. propylene, are dimerized in the absence of oxygen and in the presence of an electron donor, a solvent and a catalyst, the solvent being the dimerization product itself, and the catalyst comprising (a) a nickel compound, e.g. nickel acetylacetonate, and (b) an organo-aluminium compound of formula Al 2 R n R<SP>1</SP>X m in which R is alkyl, R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl or alkoxy, X is halogen, n+m = 5 and m is 2 or more, e.g. aluminium sesquichloride. A suitable electron donor is triphenyl phosphine. |
