Raw sewage and activated sludge are mixed in an agitation zone from where a portion of the contents pass to a separate settling zone and the remainder pass to an aeration zone. The settling zone is horizontally spaced from the agitation zone. Settled sludge from this settling zone is withdrawn. The effluent from settling zone may be passed to the aeration zone or alternatively there may be no effluent discharge from the settling zone in which case the flow rate from the agitation zone to the settling zone is controlled by the rate of sludge withdrawal from the settling zone.
|
