A core panel (12) of rigid plastic microporous foam is provided with parallel spaced passages or grooves (16) and is placed within a bag (40) of flexible barrier film (41) impervious to the passage of gas. The bag (40) includes an integral evacuation tubular portion (48) which is coupled to an evacuation nozzle (60) connected by a manifold (122) with solenoid valves (124, 126, 128) to a vacuum pump (120). After air is substantially evacuated from the foam core (12) and the bag (40) to collapse the bag (40) against the foam core (12), a vacuum sensor (132) operates a computer (140) which controls the valves (124, 126, 128) for checking the vacuum level within the bag (40) and for optionally admitting an additive gas. Closely spaced grooves (16) within opposite sides of the foam panel (12) provide for bending the evacuated panel (12). |
