In a method of forming a pattern of granules on a moving asphalt coated sheet (13), a blend drop (35) of first and second granules (39, 43) is discharged onto the sheet (13). The blend drop (35) forms a granule deposit on the sheet (13) including an inner portion of first granules (39) and an outer portion of second granules (43). An apparatus for use in the method includes a nozzle (32) having an orifice (34) for discharging a blend drop (35) of first and second granules (39, 43) onto the sheet (13). A first granule feed chamber (37) is provided for feeding first granules (39) into the nozzle (32). A second granule feed chamber (41) is provided for feeding second granules (43) into the nozzle (32). The first and second granule feed chambers (37, 41) are positioned so that the first granules (39) are fed inside the second granules (43) in the nozzle (32).
