A new process is described for the production of mono- and poly-carboxylic aromatic acids by oxidation of the corresponding precursors with molecular oxygen and/or air in the presence of a catalytic complex formed by a combination of: A. at least one metal belonging to group VIIIA of the periodic table of elements, principally ruthenium, iridium, palladium, platinum; and/or at least one metal of group VIIA, principally rhenium; and/or cerium; and B. at least one metal belonging to group IVA of the periodic table of elements, principally zirconium and/or hafnium.
