Urinal or lavatory bowl with urine volume measure

A urinal or lavatory bowl can be modified to include a urine volume measuring system for medical applications. The system consists of a shutter which can be closed across the outflow at a level which leaves space for at least 0.5 litres above. A level detector, linked to a suitable display or read-out, is positioned immediately above this shutter. This consists of a pressure sensor to detect the height of the urinary column, from which the volume is calculated automatically using a formula programmed into the monitor. After measurement of the urine volume, the shutter can be opened and the lavatory flushed to clean away the sample in the usual manner. The system is inexpensive to install and easy to use.
