WATER-RESPONSIVE POLYMER COMPOSITIONS AND METHOD OF MAKING THE SAME

Selectively water-responsive polymer blend compositions constructed of combinations of polymers including polylactic acid and polyvinyl alcohol are provided. A method of making a selectively water-sensitive homogenous polymer blend composition, comprising combining polylactide and polyvinyl alcohol at a temperature above the melting point of the polymer having the higher melting point, and below the decomposition point of the polymer having the lower decomposition point, to form a homogeneous polymer blend composition is also provided. The water-responsive properties of the polymer blend compositions include water-dispersible, water-disintegratable, water-weakenable, and waterstable.
