<p>A block of refractory material is suspended above the contents of a crucible destined to undergo an exothermic reaction. The block is heated by an electrical system, and when the required temperature is achieved, a loop of metal wire, which is suspending the block, melts, and the heated block drops into the crucible to start the chemical reaction. The metal wire also is electrically connected to control relays for the heating circuit to avoid overheating when the block has been released. Esp. used to start Ca or Mg reduction process in U or Pu metal extraction.</p> |
