Distributed buffer system for ATM switch

The system includes several input terminals (23) coupled to an input channel, receiving cells from the input channel. The input terminal contains an input buffer (21) for holding cells received faster from the input channel than the input terminal transmits them. The cells are transmitted by the input terminal from its input buffer as a reaction to numerous, higher order stages. A number of output terminals (24), each of which is coupled to an output channel, transmits cells to the output channel. The output terminal has an output buffer for cells incoming faster from the input terminals than the output transmission. A switch block (25) is incorporated between each input and output terminal for the cell transmission. A counterpressure signal circuit is linked between each output and input buffer.
