1,202,535. Sulphonation. UNILEVER Ltd. 19 Dec., 1967 [21 Dec., 1966 (2)], Nos. 57321/66 and 57322/66. Heading C2C. In sulphonation processes in which a sulphonatable material is reacted with sulphur trioxide, optionally mixed with air, in a reaction vessel including an impeller to circulate the reaction mixture and a pipe through which the sulphur trioxide is fed to a central orifice of the impeller, the reaction conditions are so adjusted that a "flow factor" not above 1.7 is achieved. The "flow factor" is defined by the formula in which V denotes the total volume in cubic feet of the gases entering the impeller per second, adjusted to normal pressure and a temperature of 20‹ C., N denotes the revolutions per minute of the impeller, D denotes the outside diameter of an impeller blade, in feet, and d denotes the average depth in feet of an impeller blade over the outer 10% of its diameter, the depth being measured at right angles to the direction of flow of the sulphonatable material through the impeller. The term "sulphonation" includes sulphation. Apparatus is described. |
