The inlet and outlet valves of an internal combustion (IC) engine are operated by electromagnetic actuators that have a disc armature 8 that is located between the coils 3.1,4.1 and core elements 3,4. A spacer 5 forms a space in which the armature moves. Springs 9,11 are located at each end and the assembly is secured with tie bolts 14. Temperature resistant elastomer material gaskets 16 are clamped into the assembly and absorbs sound.
