摘要 1328136 Polymeric dispersants COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION 11 Aug 1970 [15 Aug 1969] 38649/70 Headings C3F C3G and C3P [Also in Division C1] A dispersant for inorganic pigments, extenders and fillers comprises (a) a polymeric backbone chain having separately attached thereto a plurality of each of (b) lyophilic polymeric residues, each attached only once to the backbone chain and capable of extending freely into a liquid dispersing medium and of being solvated thereby and (c) functional residues each containing or consisting of at least one reactive group capable of reacting with the surface of the mineral to form a covalent linkage between said surface and the said backbone chain. The lyophilic residues may contain functional groups capable of chemically bonding with the dispersant medium or of copolymerizing with a polymerizable dispersant medium. Examples describe the preparation of dispersants by (A) heating a methyl methacrylate/ glycidyl methacrylate copolymer with methacrylic acid, grafting methyl methacrylate on to the resulting copolymer and reacting the graft polymer with tetraethyl silicate; (B) heating a methyl methacrylate / n - butyl methacrylate / glycidyl methacrylate copolymer with methacrylic acid, grafting the resulting copolymer with methyl methacrylate and reacting the graft polymer with oligomeric ethyl silicate or poly (vinyl triethoxy silane); (C) grafting styrene on to the methacrylic acid treated copolymer of (B) and reacting the graft polymer with tetraethyl silicate; (D) reacting carboxy-terminated polymethyl methacrylate with methyl methacrylate/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer and condensing the product with oligomeric ethyl silicate; (E) reacting methyl methacrylate/ glycidyl methacrylate copolymer with methacrylic acid, followed by grafting with lauryl methacrylate and condensation as in (D); (F) reacting carboxy-terminated poly (lauryl methacrylate) with methyl methacrylate/2-ethylhexyl acrylate/glycidyl methacrylate copolymer and condensing the product as in D ; (G) heating an ethyl acrylate/glycidyl acrylate copolymer with a polyethylene glycol monomethyl ether treated with maleic anhydride and treating the product with N-(#-aminoethyl)-γ-aminopropyl trimethoxysilane; (H) treating a graft polymer produced as in (A) with methacryloyl chloride and then grafting it with γ-trimethoxysilylpropyl methacrylate. Titania particles coated with a solution of the dispersant produced as in (A) are dried and dispersed in methyl methacrylate containing benzoyl peroxide, the resulting dispersion being polymerized between glass plates. The coated titania, alone or together with similarly coated kaolin particles, is incorporated in lacquers containing ingredients such as polymethyl methacrylate, #-methoxyethyl acetate, toluene, acetone, phthalate plasticizer and cellulose acetate butyrate.
