A magnetic ink character detection apparatus for detecting magnetic ink characters carried on a medium (8), comprises detection means (24) for detecting magnetic signals and converting them into electrical signals, transport means (23) for moving said medium relative to said detection means, said transport means being arranged such that, in response to the relative movement between said medium and said detection means, said detection means detects magnetic signals representing magnetic ink characters on said medium, amplitude detection means (28) for detecting the amplitude of said electrical signals output from said detection means; and speed control means (30) for controlling the speed of said relative movement in response to amplitude information (29) from said amplitude detection means in such a way that differences in detected signal amplitudes among individual media caused by magnetic ink character printing conditions are compensated for. <IMAGE> |
