The device (1) has a track ball or a touch pad (4) instead of a track ball, the operator's finger indicating by its motion the movement of the ball. A monitor screen (10), separate from the track ball or touch-pad, has selection fields (11) for the functions and groups of functions. One pad (5) is pre-selected to be activated as soon as the equipment is switched on. In this way, the pads (5), (6) and (7) can be pre-selected to be activated in turn.
