PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a level of deterioration of a rope by a method wherein a plurality of discontinuous targets held in a hoisting rope and longitudinally separated away from each other are monitored by a device responding to the characteristics thereof. SOLUTION: A plurality of targets 36 are captured in the strand 38 of a rope 18. A monitor device 44 detects a time needed between adjoining targets 34. A time needed between the targets 36 is relatively related to the speed of a car decided by a position detecting device 28 and a distance between the adjoining targets 36 is decided. A decided distance between the targets 36 is then compared with a known distance between the targets 36 during mounting. Through stretching of the rope 18 at a specified part to indicate deterioration, it is indicated that the rope 18 is deteriorated.
