PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a secondary battery excellent in cycling characteristics by using lithium manganate having a sulfur content at a specific level or less as an anodically active substance. SOLUTION: This lithium manganate has a sulfur content essentially of <=1000ppm, preferably of <=500ppm, has a spinel structure, and is represented by the chemical formula: LiMn2 O4 , etc. The method for producing the lithium manganate comprises mixing a manganese raw material with a lithium raw material and subsequently calcining the mixture. The lithium raw material is especially not limited, when forming the lithium manganate having a sulfur content of <=1000ppm, and includes LiCo3 and LiNo3 which are decomposed at a thermal treatment temperature and reacts with a Mn oxide. The manganese raw material is especially not limited, when forming the lithium manganate having a low sulfur content, and is preferably Mn2 O3 , Mn3 O4 , γ-MnOOH, etc. The thermal treatment temperature is preferably 400-900 deg.C, and the treatment time is preferably 1-40hr. |
