PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To industrially and profitably obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for medicines exhibiting pharmacological effects such as antipyretic effect, analgesic effect and antiinflammatory effect, etc., in a high purity by subjecting a simple compound as a starting raw material to three processes without causing the isomerization of a butyl group. SOLUTION: This method for producing α-(4-isobutylphenyl)propionaldehyde comprises (1) subjecting isobutylbenzene to a disproportionation reaction with a polyalkylbenzene of the formula R1 is (CH3 )m , (C2 H5 )m ; R2 is (C2 H5 )n [(m), (n) are each 1-5 wherein [(m)+(n)] is 2 to 6} in the presence of an acidic catalyst at -10 to 600 deg.C, (2) dehydrogenating the obtained p-isobutylethylbenzene in the presence of a dehydrogenation metal catalyst in a gaseous phase at 300-650 deg.C at <=50kg/cm<2> for 0.005-20sec and subsequently (3) reacting the obtained p-isobutylstyrene with CO and H2 in the presence of a transition metal complex carbonylation catalyst at a CO-H2 mixture pressure 10-600kg/cm<2> . |
