PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an azetidinone derivative useful as a bioactive material such as medicines and agrochemicals by forming a structure having an alkoxyalkyl group bonded to a nitrogen atom. SOLUTION: This azetidinone derivative is represented by formula I [R<1> is an aryl, etc.; R<2> and R<3> are each H or an alkyl, or form a cycloalkyl ring by bonding each other; R<4> is an alkyl; X is a halogen, hydroxyl, etc.; (n) is 1-6], e.g. 3-chloro-N-methoxymethyl-4-methyl-4-phenyl-2-azetidinone. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a Schiff base compound of formula II with a halogenated acyl compound of formula III (Y is a halogen) in the presence of a halogenated hydrogen capture at a low temperature of <=-30 deg.C. The reaction period is varied by the raw materials and the reaction temperature but ordinary the reaction is sufficiently performed in 0.1-30hr. |
