PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new antiferroelectric liquid crystal compound excellent in rapid response, low threshold voltage and temperature dependence of the response velocity by substituting an ester bond in the main skeleton of a conventional antiferroelectric liquid crystal with a thioester bond. SOLUTION: This antiferroelectric liquid crystal compound is represented by formula I [R<1> is a 4-14C alkyl; R<2> is a 2-10C alkyl; Cf is CH3 or CF3 ; X is O, etc. ; ('l') represents an optically active center], e. g. 4-(1,1,1-trifluoro-2- hexyloxycarbonyl)phenyl-4'-n-nonyloxy-2-fluorobiphenyl-4-thiocarboxylate. The objective compound is obtained by using 4-methylthiobenzoic acid as a starting material, obtaining disulfide of 4-carboxylate therefrom by four reaction steps, heating and refluxing the obtained disulfide and 4'-decycloxy-3-fluoro-4- biphenylcarboxylic acid with triphenylphosphine and acetonitrile, extracting the product with methylene chloride, dehydrating the extract and removing the methylene chloride from the dehydrated extract by distillation. |
