PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently produce a styrene-based polymer having syndiotactic structure to a high degree at a low cost by using a catalyst containing a transition metal compound. SOLUTION: A styrene or a styrene and another polymerizable unsaturated compound are polymerized by using a catalyst comprising (A) a transition metal compound of formula I [R is a hexahydroazulenyl group of formula II (R<1> is H, etc.); M is a transition metal; X is aσligand; L is a Lewis acid; (a) is the valence of M; (b) is 0, 1 or 2] (hexahydroazulenyl titanium trichloride, etc.), (B) an oxygen-containing compound of formula III and/or formula IV [R<2> to R<8> are each a 1-8C alkyl; Y<1> to Y<5> are each an element of the group 13 of the periodic table such as B; (a) to (d) are each 0-50; (a+b) and (c+d) are each >=1] and/or a compound (tetraphenyl boric acid trimethyl aluminum) capable of being reacted with a transition metal compound to form an ionic complex and (C) an alkylating agent (trimethylaluminum).
