PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a good-quality water-dispersible polymer (e.g. a polyester, a polyamine or polyether) made highly water-dispersible under mild conditions by sulfonating a hydroxy, amino or like polymer precursor obtained by polycondensing an ethylenically unsaturated reactant. SOLUTION: The polymer precursor contains polyester, polyamide or polyether blocks which are directly bonded to each other or bonded to a 2-20 C connecting part through -C(O)NH-, -C(O)- or -O-, provided that the blocks bonded directly to each other are those of different types. The polycondensation is desirably a reaction for forming a polyester, a polyether or a polyamide. The product of the polycondensation is reacted with a sulfonating agent (e.g. sodium bisulfite). It is also possible to use a peroxide as the catalyst. According to this method, the preparation can be performed under usual sulfonation conditions, and a product improved in coloration, etc., can be obtained.
