<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound that is useful as a starting material for medicines, agrochemicals and the like, as an additive to gasoline or a reactant for producing a variety of carbonates in high selectivity using a homogeneous catalyst system suitable for practical use with low corrosive properties of the reaction mixture. SOLUTION: An alcohol is oxidized in the presence of metallic copper, a copper compound or a cooper complex, a glycol ether of the formula; R1 O(CH (R2 )CH2 O)n R3 (R1 is a 1-6C alkyl; R2 is a 1-2C alkyl or H; R3 is a 1-6C alkyl or H; n=1-12), a cyclic nitrogen compound (preferably a pyridine) and oxygen, at an oxygen partial pressure of 0.001-10kg/cm<2> at 30-180 deg.C. Then, the reaction mixture is brought into contact with a zeolite or a water absorption polymer to remove the water in the reaction mixture. The treated reaction mixture is allowed to react with carbon monoxide at a partial pressure of 0.1-50kg/cm<2> carbon monoxide at 30-180 deg.C to give the objective compound.</p> |
