A rotary tumble-dryer, Figs. la and 3, in which textiles, such as pieces of laundry 7, are dried in a counter-current stream of drying air, preferably heated air, as they pass, in the directions indicated, in Fig. la, by heavy arrows, from the loading end of the rotating dryer to the discharge end on to a discharging conveyer 8, comprises a series of open-ended drums 3, 4, 5, which have equal diameters and are rotatable at the same speed, and are mounted so that the axis 6 of each drum can be set at a desired inclination. Each drum may be mounted on driven supporting rollers 16 and freely rotatable supporting rollers (17), Fig. 4 (not shown), which rollers are mounted on a frame 9, itself supported on adjustable jacks 11, 12, which can be adjusted to vary the height and tilt of said frame 9, and thus the tilt of the axis of the supported drum. The rollers 16 are mounted on a shaft 15 driven by a motor 13. The shaft 15 comprises hinges, e.g. flexible couplings 18, so that the shaft is articulated and can take up bent positions corresponding to differently sloping axes 6 of the drums 3, 4 and 5. The frames 9 are connected by hinges 10; the frame 9 of the drum 3 near its loading end being connected, by a hinge 10, to a fixed anchorage, e.g. a wall. Inwardly projecting members (2), Fig. 2 (not shown), may be provided inside at least one drum to assist tumble-drying. A swivelling flap (29), Fig. 5 (not shown), can be operated so that air is blown through the dryer in the same direction as the textiles to assist their discharge. The drying air may be heated in a heat-exchanger (22), which may be heated electrically or by hot vapour such as steam. |
