Fuel (3) is supplied to an internal combustion engine (1). A meter (4) passes a measured quantity of fuel per revolution. Meter (4) and engine (1) revolution pulses are fed to the pulse converter (5), which also digitises analogue measurements (7) of turbocharger pressure. Each tachograph pulse (6) represents a distance travelled. The controller (13) and its peripheral ancillaries (14,15,16,17) process the data, including vehicle weight, to calculate: tachometer K-factor, depending on drive ratio; rolling resistance; fuel consumption (litres/100km) and engine performance (g/kWh); and acceleration force, measured in the gear below top gear.
