1,235,240. Production of alkyl phenols. UNION RHEINISCHE BRAUNKOHLEN KRAFTSTOFF A.G. 17 Sept., 1969 [28 Nov., 1968], No. 45778/69. Heading C2C. Alkylphenols having high meta-isomer content are prepared by the alkylation of phenol with an alkylating agent at an elevated temperature of up to 120‹ C. in the presence of an aqueous catalyst solution which contains zinc bromide or zinc chloride and which is activated by the addition of a small quantity of hydrogen bromide or hydrogen chloride, followed by isomerization of the resulting reaction mixture at a temperature above 150‹ C., optionally at an elevated pressure, wherein the relatively lowboiling constituents of the reaction mixture are separated by distillation before isomerization. The example describes the alkylation of phenol with propylene using ZnB 2 /HBr as a catalyst to produce a mixture comprising 34.2% by wt. of m-isopropyl phenol, 13.5% by wt. of p-isopropyl phenol, 6.2% by wt. of o-isopropyl phenol, 12.2% by wt. of diisopropyl phenol and 2.9% by wt. of higher-alkylated compounds. |
