1333109 Cups TOKAN KOGYO CO Ltd and J SETO 23 Dec 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 61302/70 Heading A4A [Also in Division B5 and B8] In a method of making a cup or like container, a foamed sheet of thermoplastic resin is curled to the shape of the container walls with the ends of the sheet overlapping and placed within a confined space in which it expands on a heating, the container bottom or a layer of material for forming the bottom on heating is placed in a position in which it is mechanically held by the foamed sheet upon its expansion. If the bottom is of a thermoplastic material it is additionally held by melt bonding its periphery to the foamed sheet. As particularly described a foamed sheet, e.g. of polystyrene, is compressed and cut to the developed shape of the container walls; a pattern may be printed on the sheet before it is cut. The cut sheet 2 is curled to shape in a machine, Fig.4, comprising a cylinder 3 with retainer lugs 3', a sheet charger 4 and pushers 5 whereby the sheet is gradually lowered and curled to form a tube or tapering cylinder which is transferred to a female die 8 in which a bottom forming material 10 e.g. a foamed polystyrene powder has been placed. A male die Fig.7 is then inserted and spaces are provided for the expansion of the container materials when the male and female dies are heated by fluid supplied through conduits 7d and to chamber 8f. A vacuum may be applied to the space between the dies via conduits 7f, 7h and ports 7i and 8i to assist the expansion of the materials. The upper and lower rims of the container formed in the spaces 11 and 12 may be compressed by rim presses 7g and 8e to increase their strength. The material for the container bottom may comprise a foamed or non-foamed sheet e.g. of paper, cardboard, wood, aluminium or tin. |
