<p>Ceramic structure composed of a solid ceramic matrix having parallel, spaced reinforcing fibers (12) and strands of backfilled ceramic material (14). The ceramic structure is prepared by forming a fiber preform of parallel fugitive and reinforcing fibers, contacting the preform with a matrix precursor which deposits around the fibers of the preform, removing the preform from the precursor wherein the fibers are coated with precursor, drying the preform to solidify the precursor on the fibers and convert the precursor to a matrix form, repeating the contacting and drying steps to build-up precursor on the fibers, calcining the preform to convert the matrix form to another matrix form, removing the fugitive fibers from the preform to form elongated, parallel channels therein, backfilling the channels with the material, and hot pressing the preform to form the ceramic structure containing spaced fibers and spaced backfilled material disposed in the ceramic matrix.</p> |
