The device for protecting motor vehicles against being broken into or stolen has a monitoring and transmitting unit (1) which can be secured in the motor vehicle in a visible manner and is removable and contains a movement sensor (3) which monitors the interior of the vehicle and a transmitter (4) and a separate power supply. The device for protecting motor vehicles also has a receiving device which contains a visual and/or acoustic signal display (5, 6) which is located outside the motor vehicle at the premises of the owner of the vehicle or at a central location, and at least one key-operated switch (7). The receiving device (2) receives an acoustic and/or visual signal (S) from the monitoring and transmitting unit (1) in the event of unauthorised intervention into the motor vehicle by this intervention being detected by the movement sensor (3) of the transmitter (4) so that the said signal (S) is perceived by the owner of the vehicle or the respective person at the central point immediately permitting appropriate measures to be initiated.
