A recovery method involving treatment of magnetic recording tapes, including video-, data- and sound recording tapes, comprising a tape substrate, with applied coating. The substrate is heated and mechanically-stretched below melting point to separates the coating and then further treated, the tape running along a defined path throughout heating and ending at an approximately constant temperature. The cleaning of coating residues takes place immediately after heating, the substrate is then cooled directly. Also claimed is equipment to carry out the process, in which the supply roll (3) is followed by the heating unit (11) with mechanical stretching unit (4,8). A braking unit (8) causes stretching and heating is followed by cleaning (15) and cooling processes. PREFERRED TREATMENT FOR RECORDING TAPE - The heating takes place along the processing path, in a series of successive stages. Initially heating is rapid; afterwards the temperature is adjusted to the desired constant value. Following cleaning, the tape is cooled from the plastic-, to the substantially-elastic state. Dust is removed following cooling. PREFERRED RECORDING TAPE PROCESSING PLANT - The braking and drive system (8, 4) comprise self-tensioning rollers with a dust-removal unit (18) completing treatment. Between supply roller (3) and braking unit (8) there is a mechanical friction brake (7).
