The method involves using a gaseous or a liquid sample with an aromatic hydrazine and in certain cases with the application of an acid. The reaction is then evaluated spectroscopically or electrochemically. The aromatic hydrazine, and the acid if used, exist in the form of a solution or an impregnated solid phase. The reactants and reaction products are separated liquid chromatographically and are detected using spectrophotometry or fluorescence spectroscopy.
