[Also in Division C3] The invention comprises metal salts of non- transition elements of Groups I to IV of the Periodic Table with acid radicals of the formula where R represents a sec or tert-alkyl or cycloalkyl radical in an o-position to the OH group, R 1 represents H or a hydrocarbon group, n represents in integer from 1 to 4 and X represents a direct link or a bivalent group of the formula -O 2 C-Z- wherein Z is a bivalent hydrocarbon group. The invention also. comprises the free acids of the above formula when X is a bivalent group of the formula -O 2 C-Z-. Specified metals are Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd, Hg, Al, Pb and Sn. The metal may be present uncombined except with the acid radical or may be linked to one or more hydrocarbon radicals. The salts may be obtained by reacting the corresponding free acid or a functional derivative thereof with an oxide, hydroxide, carbonate, sulphide or water-soluble salt of a non- transition element of Groups I to IV of the Periodic Table or functional derivative thereof.
