A tapered end is formed on a wire wound flexible shaft by swaging a tapered waist portion 12 intermediate the ends of a shaft A and severing the shaft at the narrowest portion of the waist 12. The cable shaft A is swaged between a pair of dies B to form a waist portion 12 having oppositely directed tapered portions of square or circular cross-section positioned between portions of square cross-section. The cable A or dies B is or are rotated through 90 degrees after each die stroke to avoid the formation of flash at the corners of the section. The cable is severed at the narrowest portion of the waist 12 and the individual wire elements welded together by passing an electric current through the cable via electrodes (25, 26) (Fig. 2, not shown). The cable may alternatively be swaged by two pairs of dies, one pair acting at right angles to the other. |
