Automatic plug connector recognition method

The automatic recognition method uses an optical fibre (4) incorporated in the counter-connector (13) for the plug connector (10) and supplied with light which is received by a reflective or transmissive surface (16) attached to the plug connector during assembly of the connector system. The intensity of the transmitted or reflected light varies with the relative spacing between the plug connector and the counter-connector, with continuous detection of the intensity characteristic for comparison with a stored reference characteristic.
