One or more volatile constituents is/are removed from a solution or suspension, e.g. a solvent is removed from a plastics composition, by introducing the material to be treated through inlet pipes 3 spaced at a plurality of points along the length of an elongated container 2 through which the material is forced by two rotating interengaging screws 1 while the volatile constituent(s) is/are evaporated. Vapours leave the container through openings 4, one of which is associated with each inlet pipe 3. The treated material is discharged through outlet 5. The inlet pipes 3 are provided with metering devices. Heating or cooling medium may be passed through cavities 6.
