A process is claimed for the manufacture of ClO2 by the reduction of a chlorate in an evaporator/crystallised (4) in conditions which lead to a gaseous flux containing ClO2 and a flow of salt of the string acid in crystalline form. The crystalline salt formed as a by-product is arranged to fall into an elution leg (3), in which it is washed by a saturated alkaline solution supplying the evaporator/crystallised (4) by rising counter-currently in (3).
