A sorting apparatus is disclosed which allows automatic handling of, for example, baggage to be examined by an X-ray system. The apparatus comprises a conveyor belt system (30) which carries baggage through an X-ray unit (70) to allow monitoring of the contents of the baggage as it passes therethrough. Downstream of the X-ray unit (70) is a turntable (140). If an operator of the apparatus decides that further, manual investigation of the baggage that has passed through the X-ray unit (70) is not necessary, then the turntable (140) drives the baggage onto a collection bench (170). If, on the other hand, the operator decides that further investigation of the baggage is necessary, then the turntable (140) is rotated through 90 DEG , and baggage thereon is driven off onto an inspection bench (200) at right angles to the collection bench (170). The amount of lifting and carrying of baggage during examination is thereby reduced. <IMAGE> |
