1,242,233. Pre-heating batch material. PILKINGTON BROS. Ltd. 9 Dec., 1968 [19 Dec., 1967], No. 57500/67. Heading C1M. In feeding glass batch-material to a melting chamber, the batch is formed into a body, a heat source is provided in a core area of the body and the core area transformed into molten glass while the outer mass of material remains unmelted, and the pre-heated and partially molten material is fed into the melting chamber. In a first embodiment of the method (Fig. 1) electrodes 14 and 16 are provided within glass tube 18 in a body of batch material 22 contained in a wooden container 11. Current passed between the electrodes through molten glass 21 melts both tube 18 and the core of the body of batch material. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 7) the core may be surrounded by layers 22, 22a, 22b and 22c of batch material. The batch material may be contained in a glass container 25. The electrodes 32 and 33 used in heating the core area (Fig. 9) may be joined by a glass spiral 54a having a conductive coating, so as to give a longer conductive path. Bodies in the form of tubes may be heated in the doghouse of a melting tank by burners placed coaxially with the tube and the partially molten tubular bodies rolled into the glass-melting tank.
|
