The machine tool has a support for the workpiece (1), on which it is turned about its axis of rotation, a thrust member to press an abrasive band (18) against the workpiece surface, and a drive. The thrust member is in the form of a roller (11) which rotates about an axis parallel to the axis of rotation of the workpiece and presses the abrasive band against the surface along a generating line. The roller is flanked on each side by a rotary guide pulley (13), the axes of the pulleys lying parallel to the axis of the roller. The abrasive band is driven continuously during the machining operation to ensure a constant renewal of the abrasive surface.
