The optical reader has mechanism for producing a beam of light, and an optical device for partial transmission of the beam onto the optical disc. A lens (230) is provided to focus a beam of light from an optical source onto the surface of the optical disc (240) and also to cause convergence of the beam of light reflected from the disc surface onto a reflecting surface (224). The reflecting surface directs the reflected light at right angles to its angle of incidence. The reflected light falls onto a curved reflector (250) that causes it to converge to a point on a detector which is positioned adjacent to the light source (210) to assist in the compact construction of the reader.
