A padlock having an inverted U-shaped latch which involves two locking methods, in one of which locking can be effected only by pushing a latch into a body in an unlocked state where a key is extracted from the body, and in the other of which locking is not effected only by pushing the latch into the body when the key is inserted into the body with the padlock unlocked, but locking can be effected by turning the key after the latch is pushed into the body. The inverted U-shaped latch has its longer leg pushed into the body of the padlock such that the leg can slide in the body but does not separate therefrom. The padlock comprises recesses provided on the latch, a columnar cam having locking balls, recesses and a projection extending towards an inner cylinder for engagement, the inner cylinder having a projection extending toward the cam for engagement, the projection on the cam engaging the projection on the inner cylinder, and a coil spring provided on an outer periphery of engaging portions of the projections with one end thereof mounted to the cam and the other end thereof mounted to the inner cylinder. Turning of the cam moves the locking balls between the recesses on the latch and the recesses on the cam to enable locking and unlocking.
