PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject polymer exhibiting a melting point and having a controlled structure not forming a C-C bond structure and little in branches at the ortho positions by oxidatively polymerizing a specific raw material in the presence of a specific transition metal complex catalyst. SOLUTION: This method for producing a poly 1,4-phenylene ether comprises polymerizing a raw material compound of formula II [(m) is a larger number- average unit number than 1] in the presence of an oxidizing agent and a transition metal complex catalyst of formula I [M is a residue containing a 4-11 group transition metal atom; R<1> , R<2> are each independently a hydrocarbon, etc.; theα-carbon atom of at least one of R<1> and R<2> is wholly substituted by atoms or atomic groups except hydrogen atom; R<3> , R<4> are each independently H, a hydrocarbon group, etc.; Y is a counter-ion; (y) is the number of Y atoms and determined by the valency of M].
