PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound that can realize low-voltage driving, high-speed response, excellent processability, area enlargement, coloration from blue to red in an electroluminescent display element by introducing electron- donating groups and electron-attaching groups into a polymer main chain. SOLUTION: This is a color-developing compound for an electroluminescent display element bearing electron-donating groups (G1 ) and electron-attracting groups (G2 ) bonded to a polymer main chain. In a preferred embodiment, G1 and G2 are respectively an aromatic amino (G'1 ) and cyano (G'2 ) groups where G'1 and G'2 conjugate to each other and poly(3,6-N- alkylcarbazolylcyanophthalidene) represented by the formula (R is a 1-24C alkyl) is exemplified. This exemplified compound is prepared by allowing an N- alkylcarbazole to react with an oxyhalogenated phosphorus/dimethylcarmamide/ dihaloethane to form an N-alkyl-3,6-diformylcarbazole, followed by reaction of the carbazole product with 1,4-diphenylenediacetonitrile. |
