PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable a portable device to execute a specific function at every application under the instruction of a user by utilizing such a device structure that can be connected to an attachable/detachable carrier having a data and program storing ability and a data processing ability and can make bidirectional dialog conversation with the carrier possible. SOLUTION: The portable device is provided with a slot M2 for accepting an attachable/detachable carrier M3 provided with a first processing means incorporating a first microprocessor and first memory arranged in a case and executes a first set of prescribed data processing operations and a second processing means having a second microprocessor and second memory for executing a second set of prescribed data processing and a means which transmits messages in two directions in the form of serial bits between the first and second processing means and the first processing means reads out the storing contents of the second memory of the portable carrier and executes the first set of data processing in accordance with the read-out contents.
